Through the ages, visionaries, seekers of new
land, leaders, adventurers, have navigated the Earth using the
stars, a compass and a map. In today's society there is
more navigational information needed for traveling and enhanced
tools to track it and manage this information.
Using a GPS system enhances the visionaries,
seekers of new land, leaders, adventurers with the ability for tracking, storing,
recalling, plotting positions on Earth as well as finding new
positions to go to, share spots, and plan routes - they become
position aware! These are powerful tools of modern people to
enhanced their life experiences.
Below are brief insights into the
possibilities for today's visionaries, seekers of new land,
leaders, adventurers, and people who want to live their life to
the fullest! Get Out There! |
Possibilities
| Hiking
GPS Enhanced
Hiking/Trekking/Snowshoeing/Exploring...etc.
You want to hike from the gate of Zion
National Park to the top of Observation Point and back. Before
leaving home, plot the exact route in your GPS system; then track your progress while on the trail, referring to
your GPS system's display and any offered guidance
enhancement functionality. Be position aware,
noting your current elevation, distance traveled, distance
remaining to your target, etc., while referring to your GPS
system.
Basemap GPSPlotter Systems --
With a World Basemap GPSPlotter
system by Garmin International, view the current elevation
which corresponds to elevation numbers on the TOPO map
display loaded in the basemap. GPS provides
real feedback to verify the current position on a
world map, the intended route highlighted on the
map, and a dotted line indicating the path taken
already, which comes in handy for a safe return
back!
The Modern UTM
Universal Earth Grid Coordinates System -- By using the
modern UTM
universal Earth grid coordinates system, one can plot any position on a
Topo map using two simple grid numbers. Then, anyone can
enter
those two numbers into a GPS system and press a button to set the GPS
system's "Go To" function for guidance to
the very spot on Earth!
The GPS system will point to the general direction of
the position and offer additional trip related data.
UTM
coordinates can also be used when working from the
GPS in the field and plotting the positions on a
map. Take a position reading of the present position
with the press of 1-button on the GPS system.
Next using the UTM grid numbers and a simple UTM
roamer grid-scale tool, plot
the position on a TOPO map of the region. 'X' marks the spot! It's easy to
do, fast, very practical, universal around the world and fun! This
functionality makes GPS systems popular with adventures, travelers, and people that work in the
outdoors or on the road.
GPS-enabled hiking
is safer and will provide a significantly greater degree of confidence
to
explore further with greater position and environment awareness, yielding a
rewarding and satisfying personal experience!

GPS Should
Always Be Used With A Compass And Current Map!
YOU must know
and understand how to use them. You must understand how your
GPS unit works and its capabilities before venturing out.
And, for those who travel off road, a knowledge of using a
GPS map and UTM grid positioning along with a
topographical map is a must!
I have traveled the
world with my GPS unit to remember places I have been to and
may want to return back some day or share with others. I
simply transfer my saved spots into a PC and then onto CD-R
disc or floppy disk for safe storage.
When I feel like
planning a new adventure, I simply load the information into
a software mapping program on a PC and plan. When its time
for the adventure, I load the saved spots into my GPS unit
along with planned routes if needed and I am ready.
During the planning
stage, I use a UTM grid tool and Topo map to find UTM grid
positions of the places I want to visit. I can then take the
two UTM grid numbers and enter them into the GPS unit.
With the GPS filled
with preplanned locations, I can now use it to point me in
the direction of the place I would like to check out right
now. The GPS will point me in the direction of the saved
location I would like to go to. Simple! Time Saving!
I have saved Dive
spots while on charter dive boats, while visiting outback
wineries, while on a great path in a forest where a breath
taking view was to be had, or when I found a great little
shop. I have found a GPs unit great for saving spots for
future planning on trips. It has also been a great tool for
my prospecting adventurers - I plot where I have searched so
I don't waste time repeating myself next trip out. It makes
for a great mapping tool as well.
Get out and enjoy life
while you can and enhance your adventures with a GPS unit
matched for your adventure or navigating needs. Webmaster.
